The draw for the 2020 Hewitt took place at the East India Club on 15th January. There was a good attendance for the meeting, which includes the AGM, and which for many of us marks the beginning of the end of Winter (optimistically) and, rather like the first Snowdrops, makes us realise that Spring really isn’t that far away.
The draw itself was unusually well balanced with few shocks or old rivalries renewed. The second 8 looks to be the toughest one to get through as it contains the holders, Malvern, as well as Charterhouse and Eton. Ampleforth, who have been runners up for the last three years, drew Glenalmond and I think it’s fair to say that the unaffiliated observer would have to be particularly Scottish not to wish Ampleforth well after so many near misses. However, Repton or Epsom await the winner of that match so getting to Saturday won’t be a certainty.
For my friends in the US who regularly bet on Eton and St Paul’s, they could both meet in the quarter-final on Saturday afternoon, however the smart money will only be with the Establishment!
The draw can be found elsewhere on the website, cunningly described as “The Draw”.
